Energy Cost – Solar is the cheapest power in the world

Electricity generation and the best combination of the different technologies is confusing and not always easy to understand. Below I will explain the different energy options, and the lowest cost option available today for South Africa, your business and your home:

Coal:
Coal fired power stations are one of the biggest cause of CO2 pollution in the world. Electricity produced by dirty coal power stations has been declining steadily over the last decade. It is becoming less fashionable and big financiers are reluctant to finance this technology.
This used to be the cheapest electricity in the world, but Solar has now been crowned the cheapest electricity in the world!

Nuclear:
Nuclear electricity is more expensive than coal, but does not contribute to CO2 pollution. It has the inherent risk of a meltdown that will costs billions of Rands to contain, as we have seen with Fukushima, Chernobyl and Three mile Island. This risk is so significant that Germany is closing all its nuclear power plants
Eskom generates the same power for SA today as it did in 2004. We simply don’t need more nuclear stations.

Diesel Generators:
Diesel generators produce the most expensive electricity while polluting the air with CO2. This technology is exclusively used for backup power.

Wind Power:
Wind Power is cheaper than coal, but is only available at the windy coastal areas. In the South African inland we do not have enough wind hours per year to make wind feasible.
In conjunction with solar and gas, wind offers the cheapest electricity in the world.

Solar Power:
Solar Power Is Now The Cheapest Form of Energy in 60 Countries including South Africa. It is even cheaper than coal!
The downside of Solar is that it only works when the sun shines, thus it needs to work in conjunction with other power sources.
Research conducted by the CSIR shows that the lowest electricity cost option for South Africa is wind and solar with gas a backup.
